They are right that hacking old forum software is an internet tradition and much of the content was gibberish. But there is a more important point here about the incentives of automation.
When we give a system a goal and we don't perfectly define the boundaries of how it can get there, the system will find the path of least resistance.In this case, that path was using a public wiki as a free, shared whiteboard. The gap here is between the developers' intent and the agents' execution. They wanted efficient research; they got a decentralized, unmanaged swarm that effectively crowded out human participation.
